Sails & Rig

Briefly

Crafted by Kemp/Selden, Starlight features a simple yet sturdy double-spreader masthead rig, equipped with in-mast furling as a standard feature from its inception. All standing rigging underwent a meticulous replacement by Berthons, UK in 2014, further bolstered by servicing in 2018. Subsequently, before embarking on the journey from French Polynesia, the rigging received partial renewal in 2022, ensuring its excellent condition. To guarantee suitability for long offshore voyages, a professional rigging inspection was conducted in 2023 by C Spar New Zealand, affirming its reliability and safety.

Starlight's running rigging is in exceptional condition, having undergone complete replacement in 2018. Upgraded with Dyneema, all sheets and halyards deliver optimal performance and durability, ensuring smooth operation even in demanding conditions.

In 2020, Starlight got a new mainsail from Radial DCX Heavy cloth, renowned for its minimal stretch and exceptional durability. This upgrade ensures effortless furling into the mast without any issues. Complementing this, the generously sized genoa, covering approximately 135% of the area, ensures steady progress even in light winds, enhancing the overall sailing experience.

Construction

Briefly

Originally conceptualised by Bill Dixon and crafted by Marine Projects in Plymouth, with fitting performed by WH Moody at Swanick, this vessel was meticulously designed as a bluewater yacht, primed for long-distance passage-making. It's standard configuration features a round bilge, elegantly raked stem, and a molded retroussé stern, embodying classic design principles optimised for performance and comfort.

Constructed from single skin FRP (Fibre-reinforced plastic) laminate, the vessel seamlessly integrates chopped strand mat and woven rovings, all thoroughly hand-laid in the traditional manner using polyester resin. The deck and superstructure, reinforced with end grain balsa wood, enhance structural integrity while ensuring lightweight efficiency.

The vessel's keel configuration comprises a full-profile cast iron fin, securely fastened in the time-honoured Dixon/Moody tradition. Sixteen 25mm mild steel keel studs anchor the keel to the hull, ensuring steadfast stability even in challenging conditions. Sealed with a polymer compound and meticulously faired at the keel-to-hull joint, this configuration underscores the vessel's commitment to durability and reliability.

The hull of this vessel features an internal shell molding comprised of longitudinal and transverse frames, thoroughly bonded to the outer shell. This innovative construction technique not only enhances hull form rigidity but also imbues the vessel with exceptional stiffness.

During a comprehensive refit in 2018, all keel securing nuts and backing plates underwent meticulous replacement. Inspection of the keel securing studs revealed pristine condition, free from corrosion or oxidation, a testament to the vessel's robust construction and diligent maintenance practices.

Deck is equiped with 9 winches (2x on the masts for halyards, 1x inside cockpit for outhaul, boom vang and topping lift and 6x around the cockpit for sheets). All winches are serviced anually and last service was performed in New Zealand 2023.

Blocks at the base of the mast are in good condition with all sheets running freely and smoothly, all were correctly secured with stainless steel shackles. Genoa tracks are correctly secured to the deck with all bolt fixings seen to be intact. The mainsheet blocks move freely on the track, and the track is well secured to the vessel structure.

The stainless steel stanchions are all found to be intact and secured to the toe rail base plates.

The aluminium toe rail is well secured with no distortion noted. Bolt fixings, which secure the hull deck join are in good condition and free of corrosion or oxidisation.

The cockpit is equipped with two enclosure sets: bimini with sunshades for summer time and impermeable full enclosure for winter time, letting you enjoy outside views still sitting warm and dry.

Safety

Without compromise, safety stands as the utmost priority aboard Starlight. Exceptionally well-equipped, the vessel is outfitted with an array of safety features and equipment, meticulously chosen and maintained with the hope of never needing to use any of it.

Briefly

Ask experienced bluewater sailors which pieces of gear they value most, and “wind vane” will so often be included in the list. A wind vane self steering system is the backbone to enjoyment of offshore passages: reliable steering, quiet, no power consumption, and the windier it gets, the better a wind vane performs (as opposed to an electronic autopilot). The Hydrovane specifically is not only a back-up rudder ‘ready to go’, but is a completely independent secondary steering system for your boat – in case of main rudder loss, quadrant failure or steering cable breakage. The boat now has two independent steering systems.

The worst case on a boat. For a galley fire, there is a large fire blanket. Should the situation escalate, the vessel is armed with three manual and one automatic dry powder fire extinguishers, renowned for their effectiveness in suppressing fires. Carbon monoxide alarms in all cabins are also installed.

Widely renowned for their structural integrity, Moody boats are celebrated for their robust construction, ensuring the hull's integrity even in the event of direct impact with underwater objects.

In terms of onboard safety measures, the vessel is equipped with a single hand-operated gusher pump and three electric pumps, all conveniently operated from the main panel. The electric pumps are further enhanced with auto switches and manual override functionality, providing redundancy and reliability in the event of emergencies or flooding scenarios.

In preparation for extreme sea conditions, Starlight is equipped with an oversized Series Drogue comprising 132 cones—a critical safety device designed to mitigate the risk of capsize and damage in the open ocean. This specialised drogue is engineered to withstand the forces of a "worst-case" breaking wave strike, while also enhancing the vessel's motion in storm waves and minimising drift.

To ensure optimal functionality, the drogue is strategically deployed from the stern of the boat, anchored to newly installed chainplates at the vessel's strongest point. This configuration minimises the risk of rope chafe and maximises the drogue's effectiveness in stabilising the vessel.

For swift and efficient deployment, the Series Drogue is conveniently packed in a specially designed deployment bag and stored in the aft lazarette, readily accessible in times of need.
